Trinity in Asia

In just over two weeks' time, the 7th Warden & President, Dr Andrew McGowan, and other senior staff will be hosting a number of alumni events and receptions for parents in Malaysia (1-7 July) and Singapore (8 -16 July). To receive an invitation to these events please register your interest online.

This visit also coincides with the first tour to Asia by the internationally acclaimed Choir of Trinity College, performing in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor Baru and Singapore.

Dr Alan Watkinson to lead Advancement

The Director of Development at Scotch College, Melbourne, Dr Alan Watkinson, has been appointed Director of Advancement at Trinity College, commencing early in second semester. He succeeds the former Director of Development, Ms Clare Pullar, who recently took up the position of Director of Advancement at the Melbourne Business School.

Chapel overflows for John Gourlay's Memorial Service

More than 500 mourners attended the Service of Thanksgiving for the life of John Wilson Gourlay (TC 1954), Trinity Fellow, inaugural Chairman of the Trinity College Foundation and the inspiration behind the creation of the Gourlay Visiting Professorship of Ethics in Business, who died on 30 April, just prior to being awarded an AM in the latest Queen's Birthday Honours list.

Dame Elisabeth unveils Lord Casey

Ralph Heiman's stunning portrait of the first Trinity alumnus to become Governor General of Australia, the Rt Hon Lord Casey (TC 1909), is the latest addition to the College's growing portrait collection. It was unveiled by its donor, Dame Elisabeth Murdoch, on 26 April.

Visit of leading Chinese author, Jin Yong (Dr Louis Cha, OBE)

Known to millions by his pen name of Jin Yong, Dr Louis Cha, OBE, is both the highest selling, living Chinese author, and a very successful Hong Kong businessman. So it is not surprising that he was interested in the breadth of Trinity's educational offerings when he visited the College in April.

Don Markwell's Large and Liberal Education published

Described by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Glyn Davis, as 'an impressive argument for education that enlarges and illuminates our world', this collection of papers and speeches written by the 6th Warden during his leadership of Trinity College, 1997-2007, is now available from the Development Office. Trinity mourns the death of Ms Meagan McCue

Former students, mentors and staff of Foundation Studies and Summer Schools will be saddened to learn of the passing on 6 June of dedicated Literature lecturer and Academic Director of the Creative Thinking Summer Schools, Ms Meagan McCue.

Choir CD 'expertly performed'

'The Choir of Trinity College performs with great balance, brilliant tone colour, and highly expressive singing', writes music critic Robert Walker in his glowing review of the Choir's CD, Abide with me - a Treasury of Classic Hymns, published on page 63 of MCA Music Forum, May-July 2007 issue. Rising Chamber Music Stars

Trinity's resident quartet, the TinAlley String Quartet, are the only Australian ensemble to be competing in the Fifth Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition, 7-15 July. Held every four years, the competition is one of the biggest events of its kind in the world. You can also hear TASQ at Trinity - see below in Coming Up at Trinity.

Trinity Fellow receives Gates Award for Global Health

Founder and chairman of the Population and Community Development Association (PDA) of Thailand, and Fellow of Trinity College, Mechai Viravaidya (TC 1960) was presented with the world's biggest prize for international health - the 2007 Gates Award for Global Health - in Washington, DC, on May 31. This $1 million award from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation recognises the pioneering work in family planning and HIV/AIDS prevention undertaken by PDA, now Thailand's largest non-profit organisation.

Queen's Birthday Honours

Congratulations to a number of Trinity alumni and friends who are among those recognised in the 2007 Queen's Birthday Honours list.

Trinity College - Life Outdoors, 1954-1957

Short films shot by Peter Pockley (TC 1954) while he was a resident student some 50 years ago, have now been reproduced on DVD to provide over an hour's viewing of life at Trinity during this period, from rowing through to Jutoddie. David Barmby appointed Artistic Administrator of Melbourne Recital Centre

Currently under construction at Southbank, the Melbourne Recital Centre is Melbourne's newest arts organisation and performance venue, due to open in 2009. David, who was formerly a Senior Choral Scholar at Trinity, has been Artistic Administrator of the Australian National Academy of Music for the past six years.

Nick wields the baton

Nicholas Carter (TC 2004) conducted Victorian Youth Opera's recent production of Snow Queen, working with a cast of 48 young performers aged from nine to 23. A member of Victorian Opera's Artist Development Program, he featured prominently in an article on page 17 of The Age on 31 May.

Prizewinning profile

Although writing in her second language, Kiki Horas (TCFS April Accelerated, 2006) won First Prize in this year's Profile competition for first year Media and Communications students at the University of Melbourne. All 150 students studying the compulsory subject, Professional Writing 101, are asked to produce a 300-400 word profile in the style of a target publication. Kiki is Indonesian and was educated in Singapore before coming to Foundation Studies.

Dinner & Symposium in memory of Professor Malcolm Smith

Sunday 8 July at 7pm & Monday 9 July
The University's first Professor of Asian Law, Professor Malcolm Smith, was a non-resident tutor at Trinity from 1968 to 1971 and a member of the College Council from 1991 to 1999. He died in June last year, aged 60.

In his memory, the Asian Law Centre is holding:
- A Special Dinner on Sunday 8 July at 7pm at Ormond College Cost: $80 adult/$60 student.
- A Symposium: 'Legal Education in Asia: Professor Malcolm D H Smith, in Memoriam', on Monday 9 July at Melbourne Law School. Cost $55/ $33 students.
